I started doing this when I was a kid.  I love riding my bike or jogging and sweat out with my friends.We would choose to wake up early and jog to the hilltop nearby.There are few on the road and the air is crispy fresh.  Lovely!  I also used to jog to my school with a backpack on my back.EVeryone just thought that I am being crazy.But I just love the feeling of the endorphin rush when I go running.It is great.

Next to running, my next passion is dancing.  Well, it is not the usual club dancing that you probably thought it was.I am talking about ballet.That is correct, I said ballet.  People always get so surprise when they see a grown adult dancing ballet.  It is not usual to see a male dancing ballet, don’t even mention an adult male.We are the rare species when it comes to ballet.You can easily find 20 or more ballet dancer in one dance class and maybe only 1 male dancer.So the male dancer will be in the spotlight – a good idea.It feels great when I dance to the classical piece.You not only get to exercise and sweat it out, but yuo do so in an artistic manner too as you need to understand the music and move your body along with it.This is one best form of exercise for all.Ballet is tough on one’s body.  You have to train very hard to be able to execute the move smoothly.  All dancers have very tone muscle.  If you want to learn how to get abs quick, then dancing is great.

I worked for a big company for many years. It was stressful and I finally decided to quit and start a consulting business out of my home. It was great at first. I liked waking up when I wanted, working when I felt like it, and I loved being able to take a day off if I needed to do something important. After a few months though, I noticed I had put on several pounds. I was not overly concerned. I told myself I would start a workout routine after my business was settled.

Two years later I was fifty pounds heavier. I could not ignore it any longer, I really needed to do something. But where was I going to find the time now? All the work I put into my business was paying off, and I was busier than ever! What started out as me being able to make my own schedule turned into me being unable to shut the office door and walk away. I was tired, stressed, overweight, and starting to miss my office job.

As a last-ditch effort to turn things around, I made the decision to join a gym. I figured the gym contract and expense of the whole thing would guilt me into never missing a workout. It would force me to follow through.

Well, I kept putting it off. I just could not drag myself down there. Then, one really stressful day, I made a pot of coffee and went out on the back porch to get some space. It was such a pretty day, and I started getting really upset that everything was so out of whack and I never even got to spend time outside anymore. The negative thinking was not helping with my stress, so I grabbed a book from the side table to distract myself. It a gardening book.

I had always planned on starting a garden. I loved everything about the idea, the warm soil, watching the seeds grow, harvesting fresh produce. I collected gardening books and articles like a squirrel storing nuts for winter. One day, I would have my garden.

That’s when it hit me. Why force myself to go to the gym when I could get a workout doing something I always wanted to do? All that money I was about to spend to motivate myself with guilt could be used instead to by garden supplies. I could motivate myself with something rewarding! No treadmills or bikes, no ugly rooms filled with other sweaty, stressed people. At that moment I realized I a garden could help me live longer and also be happier.

So I did it. And while I will not be getting into skinny jeans in the near future, I have lost weight. Better yet, I found a very healthy way to manage stress. At the same time, I realized a dream! There is nothing I enjoy more than going out into my garden. It serves as a refuge when I’m stressed, as a grazing ground when I want a snack, and it definitely serves as a source of pride and achievement. If the day gets too hectic, I shut my office door and go out for a half hour to recharge. I treat myself with gardening magazines instead of fatty snacks. My garden made me realize that health is not just about how much you weigh, it’s about how much you enjoy the life you have.
